چکیده

Weather and climate are important factors for travel decision-making and overall tourist satisfaction. As central motivators for destination choice, they directly and indirectly influence demand patterns and can be a resource and limitation for tourism at the same time. In this paper, results of an in-situ survey of mountain summer tourists (n = 733) in the Alps in Southern Germany are presented. Respondents rated ‘rain’ as the most important aspect of weather during their holiday. During a 7-day holiday, 2.1 days of continuous rain are accepted, and 3.1 days of days with thunderstorms. The ideal temperature range is between 21 and 25 ̋C, thus lying 4–7 degrees lower than for beach tourism. Temperatures below 15 ̋C and above 30 ̋C are perceived as unacceptable. Statistically significant differences were found for several tourist types: Older tourists are more sensitive to heat, tourists with sports activities are more tolerant to cool temperatures, first-time visitors are more sensitive to rain and families with children prefer higher temperatures. From the results, some implications for mountain destinations arise: mountain destinations could be promoted as a heat refuge, and attracting sports tourists might be a promising way to reduce weather sensitivity; however, some variety of well-promoted weather independent attractions seems to be mandatory.

The effect of dust on solar photovoltaic systems

Soiling is the accumulation of dust on solar panels that causes a decrease in optical efficiencies of CSP systems. However, geographically widespread data is only available for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The changes in efficiency of a large commercial site (86.4 kWdc) was quantified during the summer dry period over the course of 2010 with respect to rain events observed at a nearby weath...

Seasonal precipitation gradients and their impact on fluvial sediment flux in the Northwest Himalaya

a r t i c l e i n f o Precipitation in the form of rain and snowfall throughout the Himalaya controls river discharge and erosional processes and, thus, has a first-order control on the fluvial sediment flux. Here, we analyze daily precipitation data (1998–2007) of 80 weather stations from the northwestern Himalaya in order to decipher temporal and spatial moisture gradients. In addition, suspe...

Estimating the Response of Extreme Precipitation over Mid-latitude

Global warming induced changes in extreme orographic precipitation are investigated using a hierarchy of models: a global climate model, a limitedarea weather forecast model, and a linear mountain-wave model. We consider precipitation changes over an idealized north-south mid-latitude mountain barrier at the western margin of an otherwise flat continent. The intensities of the extreme events on...

Calibrating Radar Data in an Orographic Setting: A Case Study for the Typhoon Nakri in the Hallasan Mountain, Korea

The Typhoon Nakri passed the Jeju Island in Korea (1–3 August 2014) and recorded one-day rainfall of 1182 mm at Witse-Oreum (a place name where a small volcanic cone is) of the Hallasan Mountain, Korea. This one-day rainfall amount was the highest rainfall that was ever recorded in Korea. As the altitude of Witse-Oreum is 1673 m, it was believed that the orographic effect enhanced the rainfall ...

Rain observations with a vertically looking Micro Rain Radar (MRR)

Measurements of rain were obtained with a vertically pointing micro radar (MRR) with 1 min time resolution and 50(100) m height resolution at the German Baltic coast on the Zingst peninsula (54.43°N, 12.67°E). The comparison with a conventional rain gauge (30 min integration time) for a fi ve months summer period show a correlation coeffi cient of r = 0.87 for the rainrate and agreement within ...
